essay outline

1. Research Question
Should we solve the digital divide problem in the world or in Japan?
If we have to do so, how can we do for it?

2. Thesis
We have to solve the problem because the world is getting “information society” more and more and it is not easy to live without information. It causes the economic problems, the human rights issues and so on. The solution for this problem is being done by many associations, for example, OLPC (one laptop per child) and UNICEF.

3. Main parts
  Ⅰ. Introduction
        A.    (Hook) People in the world can’t get information equally.
        B.    (Background) The differences of income, opportunity to use new equipments or talented people in the world.
        C.    Thesis
 
  Ⅱ. “digital divide” problem between countries and countries
        A.   There are differences between developed countries and developing countries.
        B.   The later is very distant from IT cultures because of poverty or their lack of talented people.

  Ⅳ, “digital divide” problem in Japan
       A. Even in Japan, the problem is serious.
        B. The development of Internet, mobile phones or other electrical machines in Japan causes it.

        A. Repeat thesis and main points.
       B. What we should do now and what we can do to solve the problem.

  1. Nice outline, Yoko! Hope you are feeling better, too.

    This is a great issue, and I agree that the issue exists both in the world and in Japan.

    As you write your draft, you may decide to focus on just one area, Japan or developing countries...doing both may make your essay too broad. A focus on Japan would be very interesting...or choose one particular developing country...or choose one particular NGO, NPO or UN project to analyze?

    Start writing and see what happens as you discover what is the most interesting to you.
